Please excuse my post in English, I speak Portuguese but not Spanish.

Steve and I (the authors of this article and translation) wished to announce this here yesterday, but we were unable to get logged in. Today I created a new account instead of waiting longer. Here is the announcement from other sites:

Dom Diogo Gomes de Figueiredo's work on the use of the montante, the two-handed sword native to Spain and Portugal, is now available in English translation. This is a relatively short work, but represents almost half of the currently known material for this weapon from these two countries, and is the primary source that Steve Hick and I have taught from at the last 3 WMAWs, and that Steve Hick and Matt Galas have taught from at recent HEMAC events. The translation, transcription, and an article on the history and context of this weapon's use are available as a free download from the Oakeshott Institute at http://oakeshott.org/Article.html.

Please note that there are a several people on this forum who have helped us or discussed the topic with us on several occasions, such as Dr. Manuel Valle and Marc Gener.

I hope that having the full transcription of the original work available will be of assistance to any of you who are working with this weapon.

Thank you so much (to you and to all the people that, in one way or another, made it possible) for sharing this work with all of us, those who have ever translated know the difficulties that may arise even in the apparently simplest translation; needless to say, these difficulties can be even greater in a 17th C. text, so behind these pages there´ve been, for sure, loads of hard work and research; the Montante, the original Spanish two-hander, is a weapon we´re all proud of which is relatively unknown (there are Spanish "field researchers", I at least know one who have spent, and go on doing it, their time in he study of it, so I guess the whole community of Spanish fencers will enjoy your paper). It´s always good news to have new and free reference works related to our beloved art, cheers and greetings.

Muchísimas gracias (a ti y todos los que, de un modo u otro, lo han hecho posible) por compartir tu trabajo; los que alguna vez nos hemos dedicado a la traducción sabemos las dificultades que pueden surgir incluso en el en principio más simple de los textos; no es necesario decir que estas dificultades se transforman en otras mayores al trabajar con un texto del SXVII, así que tras esas páginas seguro que ha habido montones de trabajo e investigación; el Montante, la genuina espada de dos manos española, es un arma de la que estamos orgullosos y que es relativamente poco conocida (hay investigadores "de campo" españoles, yo al menos conozco a uno , que han invertido, y siguen haciéndolo, tiempo en su estudio, así que creo que la totalidad de los esgrimidores españoles disfrutarán de tu trabajo). Siempre es una buena noticia que aparezcan nuevas obras de referencia relacionadas con nuestro querido arte, gracias y saludos.
