Thank you so much. This is really cool. This is such a critical work.

The more I think about it, the more I think that Pacheco was a philosopher in his own right. I think he pushed the philosophy that he learned, the philosophy of Aristotle, applying it to this area of combat, and did something new and significant. He capped the Renaissance by bringing the martial arts into its scientific ambit. My feeling about this was confirmed after reading the introduction to the Advertencias para la enseñanza de la filosofia, y destreza de las armas, assi à pie, como à cavallo (1642). I think this clearly demonstrates what he did, and what he set out to do. It reads like a bit of a complaint that he wasn't properly appreciated for it, but I think we can make up for that, by properly appreciating and making it clear to others what he did. He was, after all, recognized in his own lifetime as far as England (His fame reached England, and Ben Jonson said in one of his works [The New Inn]: <<Don Lewis, of Madrid, is the sole Master now, of the world.>> Courtesy Mary Curtis). I think we need to make sure (certainly those of us in the English-speaking world) that his legacy remains burnished.
